I watched these shows growing up and learned habits that I've since had to unlearn. In each show this selfish behavior is proven to be problematic for the characters on an individual level. The all powerful godlike main character complex has been studied and is proven to have a negative impact on work environments.

I've framed these show's outdated behaviors as a plus but overall I'm glad we've moved on a bit. Maybe it's the sense of power that each main character holds. Maybe it adds to the comedy since there's more surprise and shock value. There's definitely something about the lack of social justice/responsibility in this era of shows that elevates them. They all have me dreaming about the eye candy. I've stolen countless songs from each show. The jokes have me bursting out in random scenarios thoughout my day as I remember them. They're centered around creative, powerful main characters. These shows all either started in 2007 or began their peak in 2007.

Seasons 4-8 take tv to a place I've never been. Me and 4 other people I know gave up around 3/4 of the way into season 3. A couple of jaw dropping jokes, stunning casts and destructive buffoonery. For seasons 1-3 they're mostly riding the wave, being a light hang. This one is interesting because it starts out as more of a sitcom. Great T&A, a hilarious peak into the workings of show business, LA looks like a wonderland and Ari Gold. This show doesn't have long legs and a lot of the characters suck but if you like Californication you'll find enough here to make it well worth your while.
But then out of nowhere season 3 part 1 and 2 manages to be some of the greatest television ever made. It's a weird show because most of the show. TV has not yet found a way to surpass this masterpiece.Įntourage also came out at the same time, was also based in LA and features an agent as one of the main characters. Don Draper is like Hank if Hank cared about his job instead of Karen. It's funny because in Mad Men they're always talking about going to LA. In Californication they're always talking about going back to New York. Mad Men came out within 6 months of Californication. I think the ones most similar to Californication come from that same 2007-2014 time period. There are a lot of shows about people that are in control of or willing to take control of everything. Everyone calls him a genius and bends to his will because he makes the product, keeps the show running etc. In the business world Hank would be referred to as a creative, or talent.
I'd say Californication is a show most defined by Hank.
